Week Nine

Last week past quickly as we kept busy learning and having fun together! We have just two more weeks before Term 2 ends and are looking forward to the West Oz Wildlife Incursion on the 1st of July.

Literacy

Our letter for next week is the ‘curly’ Cc phonic sound as in cat starts with c, c, c - candle starts with c, c, c, - cap starts with c, c, c. This is a ‘tricky’ sound as it can be confused with Kk which has the same initial phonic sound. In Kindy we use the words ‘curly’ and ‘kicking’ to help the children to distinguish between Cc and Kk.

Name writing

Most students are having a go at writing their names independently. It is most important to encourage daily name writing practice so that children can order the letters in their name and use an uppercase letter followed by lowercase letters that are legible.

During our shared reading program, we have been reading the book “Olga The Brolga". We have used story picture cards for the beginning, middle and end.

Numeracy

Next week we will continue to consolidate and review numbers 1 to 10. Students are learning to recognise the numerals, make a number line and identify the dot patterns on a dice. Playing dice games such as snakes and ladders helps develop the ability to recognise the number of dots rolled without counting.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

We will be making rain shakers with our buddy class early next term. This is to reinforce our learning about weather and exploring materials that work together to make loud or soft sounds. We would like each child to bring in a small plastic bottle that has a lid to use for this activity.

Reminder: Enrolments 2020

Wattle Grove Primary School are now taking enrolment applications for Kindergarten in 2020.  If you have a child who was born between 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2016, they are eligible for Kindy in 2020. Please visit the school office for an application for enrolment.  Children currently in Kindy must be re-enrolled in Pre Primary for 2020. Letters have already been sent out to all Kindergarten families. Enrolments for 2020 close on Friday, 26 July 2019.  Applications received after this date will not be accepted.

Week Eight

We had a busy week in Kindergarten learning about the ‘G g’ phonic sound and numbers 1 - 10. Our visit from Constable Care was also a big success! It was lovely to see the children so engaged. Learning with puppets was so much fun. We also managed to get to and from the performance without getting wet!
Literacy
Our letter for next week is the ‘H h’phonic sound. We are focusing on the short initial sound only, as in hat and hot. We are continuing to explore syllables, rhyme and sight words. Please remember to pack the brain cards so that we can review sounds and add new sounds.
Numeracy
Next week we are reviewing the numbers 1 - 10. The children will continue focusing on orally counting in order starting at one. They will also be showing the numbers on their fingers in a variety of ways and making small collections of various objects.
Science
Next week we will be taking a closer look at the weather and the types of clothing we would wear if it were hot or cold. We will be asking the children to sort clothing into the seasons winter and summer. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore different vocabulary.
Assembly

Please remember to pack your library bag and book to return on Monday. Thank you for your continued support.

Constable Care and Collage Afternoon

Week Seven

It has been another fun week in Room 1. We have spent some time talking about our beautiful state of Western Australia and some of the special animals, plants and locations that we have here. We have continued to talk about living and non-living things and are creating a collage of WA items as a class display. Thank you to parents and students who provided us with pictures for the display.

This week we will be learning a new phonic sound Gg as in goanna and galah.

Our new sight word is can. We will be learning to recognise this word in sentences and making up our own sentences that use this word.  For example
I can run.
I can draw
I can sit.
When reading books with your child, you may like to ask them to find words that they recognise. The sight words that we have learnt so far are look, Mum, am, at, I and a.

In numeracy we will be learning all about the number 10. We will also be practising to count starting from different points in the number line. For example, starting at 5 and counting 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. We will also practise counting aloud from 1-20 and backwards from 10-1.

Constable Care was a fun, educational and interactive incursion yesterday. We hope your children enjoyed the puppets and the host Dawson. He was engaging the children with a wonderful sense of humour and encouraged their use of imagination.
